Balancing Act: How Women Can Achieve Work-Life Balance

Striking a beneficial work-life balance has been a challenge for workers across all global industries. While a pressing issue for all genders, female employees often report feeling more strain than male employees in this area.

This is because many women are expected to both work professionally, yet still carry the burden of work in the home. This strain increases exponentially in households when children are involved. Having to tackle dual responsibilities can increase stress, cripple physical and emotional health, and lead to burnout and lower work productivity.

A 2016 Statistics Canada report reveals that women still do 50% more unpaid work at home than men, with women also reporting being less satisfied with work-life balance. Studies state women have to combat greater expectations of them at home due to gender norms, which also affects how they take advantage of family-friendly policies at work.

Its important for women to step back, take a deep breath, and reassess how they juggle their corporate and domestic responsibilities. Here are seven methods how they can improve their work-life balance.

1. Prioritize self-care

Take care of your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Make time for activities that recharge you, such as exercise, spending time with loved ones, or hobbies which bring joy and relaxation. Taking care of your physical, mental, and emotional needs helps you build a strong foundation to navigate life’s ups and downs effectively.

2. Establish boundaries

Setting boundaries can help establish healthy work-life balance, which is essential for long-term career growth and success. Use assertive and respectful communication to express your needs and expectations to colleagues, family, and friends, and ensure they understand and respect your need for personal time.

3. Delegate and ask for help

Don’t hesitate to ask for support from partners, family members, friends, or colleagues. Delegate tasks at work when possible, and share household responsibilities to lighten your load. By assigning appropriate tasks to the right people, you can also leverage their skills and expertise, resulting in increased productivity and overall output.

4. Disconnect from technology

Create designated tech-free periods during your day, especially during personal time and before going to bed. Stop doom-scrolling, and answer work calls or emails only when on the job. Constant connectivity can blur the lines between work and personal life, leading to burnout and reduced quality of life.

5. Learn to say no

We all want to be seen as passionate workers, and be noticed. However, it’s also important to recognize your limits and be selective about the commitments you take on. Refusing nonessential tasks or requests that don’t align with your priorities can free up time for things that truly matter to you.

6. Seek flexible work options

Explore different work arrangements, such as remote work, flexible hours, or part-time options, if they are available and feasible for your job. These arrangements can provide more control over your schedule and enhance work-life balance.

7. Foster a supportive network

Surround yourself with a supportive network of colleagues, friends, and family who understand and value the importance of work-life balance. Share your experiences and challenges with others who may be facing similar situations.
